Fruiting Body or Mycelium: What Is Really Inside a Mushroom Capsule

The single most useful fact on a mushroom label is which part of the fungus it contains. Here is why, and how to tell.

Two very different materials

A mushroom is the fruiting body of a fungus, the part that pops up to release spores. The rest of the organism, usually hidden in wood or soil, is mycelium: a network of fine threads. Both can be dried and powdered, and supplement labels use both. But they are not interchangeable, chemically or commercially. In Lion's Mane, for instance, hericenones are found mainly in fruiting bodies and erinacines mainly in mycelium[2].

The grain problem

Much of the mushroom supplement industry grows mycelium on sterilized grain such as rice or oats, then dries and mills the whole block, grain and all. The result is often labeled "mycelium" or "full spectrum", but a large share of it can be starch from the grain. A laboratory survey using specific enzymatic assays found that such mycelial products contained high levels of alpha-glucan (starch) and much lower beta-glucan than fruiting bodies[1]. Some older tests could not tell the two apart, which let starchy products report high "polysaccharide" figures.

Mycelium is not always worse

Mycelium grown in liquid culture and purified can be a precise ingredient. The erinacine A-enriched Lion's Mane mycelium in a 2020 Alzheimer's pilot was exactly that, standardized to a stated erinacine content[3]. The issue is not mycelium itself but unlabeled, unstandardized mycelium sold as if it were equivalent to the fruiting-body powder used in other trials[4].

What to look for on a label

  • The part, named for each mushroom: "fruiting body", "mycelium", or "mycelium on organic brown rice".
  • An extract type and ratio, if extracted.
  • Beta-glucan content with a named method, and ideally alpha-glucan too.
  • For Lion's Mane, erinacine or hericenone content where available.

Federal rules expect the part used to be named for botanical ingredients[5], and manufacturers must test identity under current good manufacturing practice[6]. Mindoxa's public pages name neither the part nor the extract for any of its ten mushrooms, so check the bottle when it arrives.

Quick answers

Is fruiting body better than mycelium?

Not automatically. Fruiting bodies usually have more beta-glucan; some purified mycelium extracts are well standardized. Unlabeled mycelium on grain can be mostly starch.

Does Mindoxa use fruiting body or mycelium?

The seller does not say. Check the Supplement Facts panel on your bottle, or ask the helpdesk.
